Manchester United's Robin van Persie scored a curling free-kick goal in the 93rd minute to win the Manchester derby over Manchester City 3-2.

United was up 2-0 early in the game, but City slowly worked their way back and tied it at 2-2 in the 86rd minute.

Three minutes into extra time, United got a free kick in a perfect spot, and van Persie placed it in the far corner for the walk-off win.

It was City's first loss of the season. Ironically, Manchester City scored a 93rd minute goal in the final game of last year's Premier League season to snatch the title away from United.

Manchester United's Alex Ferguson Shares The Secrets Of His Success With Harvard Business School

$

alex fergusonIn what is possibly the most wide-reaching talk ever given by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager has told students at Harvard Business School in Boston the secrets of his success.

Ferguson, who was the subject of an academic study by professor Anita Elberse at the Harvard Business School, visited the school earlier this year to meet students to discuss the report.

The Scot later described the experience as "excellent, enjoyable, and comfortable" while also learnt a lot about himself.

“The whole atmosphere was professional,” Ferguson told the HarvardGazette . “It was clear that they had done their homework. They had properly read the case study and supplemented that with their own opinions and research. That gave me a certain assurance that I had made the right decision to go ahead with the case.

“The key element for me was Anita, and how she controlled the room. I am always talking about ‘control.’ She controlled that room. She was the boss. I thought that was very impressive, plus the fact that she has a certain humility about her; she’s quite down-to-earth.

“The process was excellent, enjoyable, and comfortable,” Ferguson added. “I never felt intimidated in any way, and I never felt reluctant to be anything other than completely open.

“The part of the discussion from which I learned the most about myself was when they were discussing the balance between ‘fear’ and ‘love’ in my approach to managing people. If you look at my history, there’s all this hype about hair dryers and anger and so on. But the students acknowledged another side to it, which is more apt in terms of how I have fostered relations with people and developed the team over the years.

"The reality is not always how the press portray it. I felt the students were quite accurate in terms of how they analyzed this aspect, questioning and recognizing this important dynamic of management.

THE BEST OF FERGUSON

Encouraging words

"I once heard a coach start with 'This must be the 1,000th team talk I've had with you,' and saw a player quickly responding with 'And I've slept through half of them!'

"So I like to tell different stories, and use my imagination.

"Generally, it is about our expectations, their belief in themselves, and their trust in each other.

"I remember going to see Andrea Bocelli, the opera singer. I had never been to a classical concert in my life.

"But I am watching this and thinking about the coordination and the teamwork, one starts and one stops, just fantastic. So I spoke to my players about the orchestra - how they are a perfect team."

Talking tactics

"Tactics can change depending on whom we are playing.

"I tend to concentrate on one or two players of my opponents - the ones that are the most influential.

"Who's the guy who is taking all the free-kicks? Who's the guy who's on the ball all the time? Who's the one urging everyone on? The rest of the time I concentrate on our own team.

"On Friday we take our players through a video analysis of our opponents: their strengths, their weaknesses, their set pieces, what their team is likely to be, and so on.

"Then on Saturday, we might give them another, shorter version - just a recap of the previous day."

Quick talking

"There are maybe eight minutes between you coming up through the tunnel and the referees calling you up on the pitch again, so it is vital to use the time well.

"Everything is easier when you are winning: you talk about concentrating, not getting complacent, and small things you can address.

"But when you are losing, you know that you are going to have to make an impact.

"The last few minutes of the first half I'm always thinking of what I'm going to say. I'm a little bit in a trance. I am concentrating.

"I don't believe in taking notes. I see other coaches do it, but I don't want to miss any part of the game.

"And I cannot imagine going into the dressing room, looking at my notes, and saying 'Oh in the 30th minute, that pass you took'. I don't think it's going to impress the players."

Anger management

"I've still got a wee bit of anger in me, thinking of how we threw the league away last season.

"It was another day in the history of Manchester United. That's all it was. It created the drama that only United can produce.

"Who would have thought that Blackburn, bottom of the league, would beat us 3-2 at Old Trafford? Or that Everton would draw with us when we were up 4-2 with seven minutes to go?

"My motivation to the players will be that we cant let City beat us twice in a row."

Old big ears

"It's difficult to marry the two competitions in one season.

"We are in a country where tribalism is rife. There is strong competition between regions and top clubs, with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham based in London, two clubs here in Manchester, and Liverpool.

"That puts tremendous pressure on you to win your league. But the European Cup is the biggest trophy.

"Last season, when we went out in the group phase, I made a mistake. I was playing a lot of the young players.

"Although that had worked in the past we got careless in our games.

"It was a shock, because it was only the third time I've not qualified for the knockout stage. I decided I wouldn't be taking the risks I took in Europe last year."

Playing politics

"The Glazers decide. They have generally been very supportive and are very low-key.

"If I owned United and they won the league, I would be over the moon.

"I remember when I played with Rangers, when the directors were under the shower with their clothes on, dancing about.

"But the Glazers shook a few hands and had some photographs taken, that was it.

"Some English clubs have changed managers so many times that it creates power for the players in the dressing room.

"That is very dangerous. Football management in the end is all about the players. You think you are a better player than they are, and they think they are a better manager than you are."

Building blocks

"The first thought for 99 per cent of newly appointed managers is to make sure they win to survive. They bring experienced players in, often from their previous clubs.

"But I think it is important to build a structure for a football club - not just a football team.

"You need a foundation. And there is nothing better than seeing a young player make it to the first team.

"There are three categories: players from 30 and above, the players from roughly 23 to 30, and the younger ones coming in.

"The idea is that the younger players are developing and meeting the standards that the older ones have set before.

"For me the hardest thing is to let go of a player who has been a great guy.

"But all the evidence is on the football field. If you see the change, the deterioration, you have to start asking yourself what it is going to be like two years ahead."

Special ones

"Jose [Mourinho] is very intelligent, he has charisma, his players play for him, and he is a good looking guy.

"I think I have most of those things, too, apart from his good looks.

"He's got a confidence about himself, saying 'We'll win this' and 'I'm the Special One'.

"I could never come out and say we're going to win this game. It's maybe a wee bit of my Scottishness?

"[Pep] Guardiola is an impressive guy. He's brought about change in Barcelona, urging the team to always work hard to get the ball back within seconds after losing it.

"They are gifted but work hard. It was a fantastic achievement. He elevated the status of his players."

BlackRock Now Owns A Piece Of Manchester United (MANU)

Manchester United

LONDON (Reuters) - Asset manager BlackRock <BLK.N> has built a stake of more than 8 percent in the listed shares of British soccer club Manchester United <MANU.N>.

The U.S. company owns 8.21 percent of the English Premier League club's Class A shares, listed on the New York Stock Exchange last year, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The asset manager has also invested in the Formula One motor racing business.

United are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and have had a good start to the year commercially, signing up a series of sponsorship deals. A report this week by Forbes said that United's recent share price rise has made it the first professional sports team with a value of more than $3 billion.

The club is owned by the American Glazer family. The share listing last August used a dual structure of Class A and B shares, which left the Glazers firmly in control of the club.

The shares languished below the initial $14 price for much of last year but have surged in recent weeks to a peak of $17.75. They closed at $16.78 on Wednesday.

English soccer clubs will benefit over the next three years from enhanced television deals, while spending should be curbed by European rules punishing clubs that run up big losses.

Manchester United Gets A Huge 1-1 Draw Against Real Madrid: Here Are All The Goals And Highlights

wayne rooney manchester united celebrating a goal

Manchester United got a pivotal 1-1 draw away at Real Madrid today in the first leg of their Champions League match-up.

The two teams will play again in Manchester on March 5th to decide who moves on to the quarterfinals.

If they draw that game as well, the tiebreaker is away goals. So that one goal today was huge.

Manchester United's Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the 20th minute on a headed goal off a corner kick.

Ten minutes later, Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo got a free header in the box and smashed it home to tie it 1-1.

After that, Real Madrid had all the possession in the world but couldn't find the cutting edge in the box.

Bombastic announcer Gus Johnson called the game on Fox Soccer for the first time. He was surprisingly fine — playing it conservatively and not talking too much.

Here are the two goals in GIF form:

Real Madrid eliminated Manchester United from the Champions League in controversial fashion today.

The final score was 2-1. But Manchester United had the lead when Nani was given a red card for a kick to the chest of Arbeloa.

It changed everything, and now Man U is going home.

Here's how the game went down.

After a slow first half, Man U grabbed the lead with a Sergio Ramos own goal early in the second half:

But the Nani red card a few minutes later changed everything:

Luka Modric tied it up with a super-strike in the 66th minute:

Ronaldo put Madrid in front for good in the 69th minute:

United absolutely crumbled after the card. And there's no doubt that the soccer world will be freaking out about that decision over the next few days.

nani given red card against madrid

Manchester Unitedwas up 1-0 and in control against Real Madrid when Nani was ejected from the game for hitting Arbeloa in the chest with a flying kick.

There wasn't a whole lot of contact. You see this type of play all the time, and it's almost always a yellow card, but never a red card.

In the 10 minutes after the card was given, Real Madrid scored two goals. They went on to win 2-1, eliminating United from the Champions League.

Here's the video:

After the game, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho recognized the situation and said, "The best team lost. We didn't deserve to win."

Here it is in GIF form. The red card was harsh, and it changed the outcome of the game:

There Are Rumors That Wayne Rooney Is Going To Leave Manchester United After He Was Benched Yesterday

wayne rooney manchester united celebrating a goal

A day after Wayne Rooney was left out of the starting lineup in Manchester United's controversial Champions League loss to Real Madrid, the UK tabloids are full of rumors that the star is set to leave the club.

Tomorrow's front page of the Daily Star reads, "ROONEY OUT OF MAN U."

The actual story isn't online yet, but the blurb says the club will sell him for £20 million and try to replace him with Cristiano Ronaldo ... which sounds crazy.

The Times of London is floating the rumors as well, reporting that the club is willing to sell Rooney and suggesting that the newly rich French club PSG is readying a £40 million bid.

The Guardian tangentially wrote about the rumors, reporting that Man City would not be a possible landing spot for the English striker.

Important note: Crazy transfer rumors in English soccer are rampant. It's part of the culture. So who knows how much truth there is to any of this.

But we do know that Rooney and the club had a falling out in 2010. It'll be a storyline to watch this summer.

Chelsea Goalie Makes A Crazy Kick Save After Diving In The Wrong Direction Against Manchester United

Manchester United and Chelsea are playing a Monday afternoon FA Cup game right now.

The highlight of the first half came when Chelsea goalie Petr Cech pulled off an excellent but over-complicated save on a swerving Chicharito shot from distance.

Cech was fooled by the movement of the ball, and he dove in the wrong direction. But he was able to kick out his foot and get the save in the end.

In retrospect, if he stood perfectly still he would have caught the shot.

Robin Van Persie Scored A Stunning Volley To Wrap Up The EPL Title For Manchester United

Manchester United clinched their 20th EPL title today with a routine 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Robin van Persie, who was United's big offseason acquisition, scored all three goals in the first 32 minutes to seal the deal.

The fact that United wrapped up the title with four games left speaks to the general mediocrity of the league this year. Manchester City took a step back from their dominant form last season. Chelsea brought in a slew of young players and hit the skids in the winter. And Arsenal struggled early before putting together a nice run in the last few weeks.

United was the league's best, most consistent team from wire to wire and they deserve the title.

They won it in stylish fashion too — Van Persie's second goal today was amazing.

He ran under a pass from Wayne Rooney, watched it fall over his shoulder, and then smashed it into the back of the net on the volley.

alex ferguson

Legendary coach of UK football club Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, has retired.

There were rumors of this in recent days, and now it's official. (Here are the odds on who will replace him.)

Ferguson stood alone as the greatest coach in the league. Twitter is absolutely exploding with the hashtag #ThankYouSirAlex.

From the ManU site:

-----------------------------

 Sir Alex retires

• Thirteenth league title in 26 years will be his last

• Most successful manager in English football history to become a director of Manchester United FC

NYSE: MANU.  Manchester, UK. Sir Alex Ferguson will retire at the end of the season, Manchester United announced today.  The most successful manager in English football history will bow out after the West Bromwich Albion game on 19 May and join the football club board.

Announcing his decision to retire, Sir Alex Ferguson said:  “The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.  “It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

“Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.  “Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.  “I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

“As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

“In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

“Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

“To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United.”

Joel Glazer said:

“Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he’s also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the Club have been truly remarkable. I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."

Avie Glazer said:

“I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the Club as a director. His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future.”

David Gill said:

“I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years – through the Treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.

“We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition.

“Alex’s vision, energy and ability have built teams – both on and off the pitch – that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

“The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.

“What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend.”

Seven Crazy Facts That Tell You Why Sir Alex Ferguson Is Such A Legend

sir alex ferguson man u

Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson announced that he's retiring today after 26 years.

Since he took over in 1986, he has turned Man U into the best, most consistent team in England. He guided the club through English soccer's exponential growth from a local game to a global business.

Manchester United wouldn't be the worldwide brand they are today if it hadn't been for him.

To get a sense of just how monumental a figure he was, take a look at these crazy facts:

  • He has coached Manchester United for longer than the Premier League has existed
  • In 1989, three years after he took over, the club nearly sold for $31 million. Today it's valued at $3.2 billion
  • He has won nearly twice as many EPL titles (13) than every other team combined (7)
  • Before he got there, the club hadn't won a title in 19 years
  • Since 1991, he has never finished lower than third in the EPL
  • He won 39 trophies (including this year's title) in 26 years at Man U, including 13 EPL titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 10 Community Shields, 2 Champions League titles, 1 FIFA Club World Cup, 1 European Cup Winners' Cup, 1 European Super Cup, and 1 Intercontinental Cup
  • Man U won 894 games and only lost 267 under him

Manchester United Shares Are Taking A Hit This Morning (MANU)

$

0

Manchester United shares are off to a rough start this morning following news that Alex Ferguson will resign as manager of the club, a post he took in 1986.

The stock fell as low as $17.73 – down 5.5% – shortly after the opening bell in New York. It has since bounced back a bit and is currently trading at $18.38, down 2.1%.

Miller Tabak Chief Economic Strategist Andrew Wilkinson highlights the story in a note today (it's a pretty slow week) and warns that shares could see rising volatility ahead:

The 2012 IPO raised $233 million by slicing off a small chunk of the 135-year old team at $14.00 per share.

At the time of the IPO Soros Fund Management took a $47.5mm stake in the company buying 3.397mm shares, which if still owned would be worth $63.78mm. Soros Fund Management remained a holder as at the end of December 2012 according to its 13F filing. In a 2010 debt offering the prospectus cited the potential departure of Fergie as a risk factor that might put into jeopardy the success of the club, highlighting the instability of investments in sports franchises revolving around specific individuals.

While Sir Alex is heading from the dressing room to the boardroom, he leaves behind a lucrative trophy cabinet containing 13 Premier League titles, two European Cup victories, five FA cup wins and four League Cup wins. Still, with an average squad age of 23 years old, the prospects remain bright for the club. However, those players will have to prove that a team is only as good as its manager. With the season culminating this weekend, shares in the company could witness rising volatility at least until a new successor is signed and even then the Premier League is closed for the summer.

The chart below shows Man U's share performance since the club's stock began trading in August.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Dominance With Manchester United Was Unmatched

Before Alex Ferguson became the manager of Manchester United, the club had already won seven league titles. Even though they had been a contender in the years before Fergie's arrival, they had not won a championship in 20 years.

The Red Devils were decidedly mediocre in Ferguson's first few years, finishing in the middle of the league table three times in four seasons. But beginning in 1991-92, United went on an incredible stretch of 22 straight seasons finishing among the top three.

During that streak, which is still active, Manchester United has won 13 league titles. Here is what United has done under Ferguson...
